Two Cylinder Column Type Marine Engine
- 2 Inch Bore by 2.5 Inch Stroke
- Rated 2.5 H.P. Turning-500 RPM on 125 psi
- Stephensen Reverse Gear, Hand Wheel Operated
- Height 15 Inches
- Weight with flywheel 48 lbs.
The design was based on the following requirements
- No castings required,
- The cylinder block will be one piece and small enough to machine on a 9 inch lathe
- Ball bearings and needle bearings will be used on all rotating shafts.
- The finished engine must have the appearance and proportions of a true Marine Column
Engine.
- Machining and design will be straightforward as possible to allow construction by
amateur builders
- Machining on a 9 inch or larger, lathe-plus some milling.
The crankshaft is of built-up construction such that it may be disassembled to install
or replace the lower rod end bearings. The crosshead bearings are Torrington Needle
Bearings, and the eccentric bearings are ball bearings of split race construction.
The crosshead guides are of trunk design. The cylinder drains are connected by piping for
convenient discharge of condensate during engine warm-up the cylinders are wood lagged.
A displacement type lubricator is included in the plans.
The original engine took approximately 350 hours of' design and construction time using
a 9 inch Logan Lathe and a Clausing Miller. The engine is an excellent example of using
"no castings" and represents design features proven from past experience gained from
designing numerous engines. If you have ever toyed with the thought of designing your
own engine without castings studying these plans may answer many of your design problems,
most parts are made of cold rolled steel.
This has been a very popular engine. There are several in operation in small steamboats.
